The first movie I saw tonight was "Soul Surfer". It's the true story of Bethany Hamilton who was attacked by a shark while resting a bit during training for a surf competition. This was a really good movie. And it became quickly apparent that I didn't pay attention to any news of the things she did after the attack.
Okay, let's be honest here. How many of us would want to carry on with our ho hum day to day lives after something like that? I know I'd be hard pressed to get out of bed each morning. Not only did she get out of bed but just three weeks after the attack she was surfing again. Three weeks!!!
I didn't know ahead of time that this film has a Christian theme. Had I known I definitely would have seen it but this was a good surprise. This was yet another example of someone overcoming enormous obstacles with help from Above.
Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt did a great job playing Bethany's parents. AnnaSophia Robb played the part of Bethany. I've seen her in "Because of Winn Dixie" and "Bridge to Terabithia" and liked her in both. She doesn't disappoint in "Soul Surfer" either. Then there's Carrie Underwood. She's a really good singer.
There was no cussing and no nudity in this film. The girls wear skimpy bikinis in different parts of the movie but they're surfers. What do you expect? I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone. Just a warning though. The shark attack scene isn't graphic but they do show blood in the water and also soaking through the shirt that one of the guys used as a make-shift bandage. That's the worst it gets.
I hope you'll go see this. It's worth a couple hours of your time.
